10 powerful and inspirational quotes by Marcus Garvey

As you already know, I use a lot of quotes from influential people to guide me through life. As a Jamaican I could not allow the month of August to end without paying tribute to one of Jamaica’s national heroes Marcus Garvey. His work has been a tremendous inspiration to many over the years and is still relevant today. Take minute to explore some of his words below and how much they still relate to us today.

“Take advantage of every opportunity; where there is none, make it for yourself.”

” If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life.”

” With confidence, you have won before you have started.”

” There is no force like success, and that is why the individual makes all effort to surround himself throughout life with the evidence of it.

“Liberate the minds of men and ultimately you will liberate the bodies of men.”

” We must give up the silly idea of folding our hands and waiting on God to do everything for us. If God had intended for that, then he wouldn’t have given us a mind. Whatever you want in life, you must make up your mind to do it for yourself.”

“Always try to associate with people, from whom you can learn something. All the knowledge that you want is in the world and all you have to do is seek it.

” The man who is not able to develop and use his mind, is bound to be the slave of the other man who uses his mind.”

“Ambition is the desire to go forward and improve one’s condition. It is a burning flame that lights up the life of the individual and makes him see himself in another state. To be ambitious is to be great in the mind and soul. To want that which is worthwhile and strive for it. To go on without looking back, reaching to that which gives satisfaction.”

“I trust that you will so live today as to realize, that you are masters of your fate; if there is anything you want in this world, it is for you to strike out with confidence and faith in self and reach for it.”

Choose your reaction

Just a little pick me up, read this story about this dad and his daughter and leave your thoughts below.

Your reaction matters more than what happens to you

Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.

Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot.

He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing.

After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the boiled eggs out and placed them in a bowl.

He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup. Turning to her he asked. “Daughter, what do you see?”

“Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she hastily replied.

“Look closer,” he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.

“Father, what does this mean?” she asked.

He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity– the boiling water.

However, each one reacted differently.

The potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak.

The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard.

However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.

“Which are you,” he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean? “

My thoughts

It’s always ok to reinvent, reset, refocus or however you choose to define your do overs. No one situation can define you, if it is not working one way try another. One plan fails, just make a new one, don’t stay down when adversity knocks you down. Get up, dust yourself off and try again, always keep going.

Is being rich important?

This is something I know nothing about, because I am not rich. However the goal is to be rich. Leave a comment below if you think that striving to be rich is important. My goal is to be successful and comfortable enough to do the things I want and to give my son the kind of life I only dreamt about as a child. As cliche as that sounds, it is my goal. So this leads to the question is being rich important? Or should I say, is trying to be rich important?

Yes of course money can’t buy you everything. There are certain things that money just won’t get you, regardless of how much you have. Hey, but with enough money you can create situations that will bring you those things. Hear me out, let’s say for example, taking a vacation. The ideal vacation usually provides relaxation and fun and everything that is peachy. Listen, I’m not saying that you need to be rich to take a vacation, but I’m just subscribing to the fact that money does play a role in providing happiness.

A lot a people live their entire life without ever being rich and yet they are content. But, is being rich such a bad thing? Or is striving to get there wrong? Hell no, A lot of people also spend their entire life trying to be rich and there is absolutely nothing wrong with both way of life.

When it’s all said and done, it really boils down to each individual. For me I’d say yes being rich is important. I’m not rich now, but you best believe, “I’m gonna die trying.”

Winning is fun, sure. But winning is not the point. Wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never letting up is the point. Never being satisfied with what you’ve done is the point.

One hard fact about success

“Success is a journey, not a destination.” I don’t know who said these words, but it was said and I believe it to be true. Like any other journey, it involves, speed bumps, detours, road blocks, dead ends and the list goes on and on. You get the picture, success is not an easy road.

When you go on a road trip, you do a lot of planning and you take a lot of essentials with you to keep you comfortable while you make this trip. You can’t take a road-trip without your road trip snacks, music, books to read, etc. The road to success is pretty much the same, you can’t take the journey without proper direction and motivation to keep you going.

Whatever it is, that keeps you going on that journey, is your motivation. Motivation defined, means the reasons for your actions, so essentially it is whatever gives you that drive, the push, that “ump” you get the gist. It can be anything and it can be anyone.

I find that stories can be very great at uplifting your spirits, while providing that well needed optimism, hope, positive outlook and just overall a great motivation.

The Colonel Sanders, Kentucky fried chicken story

Once, there was an older man, who was broke, living in a tiny house and owned a beat up car. He was living off of $99 social security checks. At 65 years of age, he decide things had to change. So he thought about what he had to offer. His friends raved about his chicken recipe. He decided that this was his best shot at making a change.

He left Kentucky and traveled to different states to try to sell his recipe. He told restaurant owners that he had a mouthwatering chicken recipe. He offered the recipe to them for free, just asking for a small percentage on the items sold. Sounds like a good deal, right?

Unfortunately, not to most of the restaurants. He heard NO over 1000 times. Even after all of those rejections, he didn’t give up. He believed his chicken recipe was something special. He got rejected 1009 times before he heard his first yes.

With that one success Colonel Hartland Sanders changed the way Americans eat chicken. Kentucky Fried Chicken, popularly known as KFC, was born.

Success is a journey, not a destination. What if the Colonel had stop trying after the heard no the first time, or even the second time. On your journey, there will be bumbs and hurdles to cross, but with the right motivation and determination you will get to that destination.

🌼Monday Motivation🌼

As cliche as it may sound, positive thinking, leads you to a positive outcome. It’s the beginning of a new work week, one that is filled with new possibilities. Don’t allow your mind to control you and tell you that you can’t or you won’t. Instead take control and start with some “positive thinking” think that you can, you must, you will. Do not give fear no room in your mind. Fill you thoughts with positive vibrations and take control of your destiny.

Don’t be pushed around by the fears in your mind. Be lead by the dreams in your heart.
